TODO:

Hi, I'm Cole!

Though, legally, I’m Douglas (hence the website name). I was born in northern California, but then moved to southern California, Missouri, New York, Texas, and finally Michigan. Currently, I attend Michigan Technological University and am majoring in Mechatronics with a minor in Data Acquisition & Industrial Controls. I am pursuing a career in Embedded Systems, so I find different ways to progress my skills by doing fun little projects! I like to spend my free time hiking, biking, snowboarding, lifting, drumming, and working on my 1992 Miata!

A Little Bit about This Website

This website was written from scratch and will be hosted on my Raspberry Pi. This is the product of a philosophy I have chosen to subscribe to over the last few years, which is that building things with your own physical (or digital) hands from the ground up teaches you far more than any book or class could ever practically teach you. From completing this project, I have learned an immense amount about security, networking, web development, and — most importantly — myself. I highly encourage you to do your own project based on whatever you’re interested in. Should this push you to pursue your own endeavor, please reach out and tell me about it!

Photography

About a year ago, one of my friends got me into photography. He taught me a bunch of useful things and helped me start, but then I took my own creative direction from there. So far, these are some of my favorite shots that I have taken!

I got this shot at the Lake Superior Performance Rally of Travis Pastrana rounding a corner sideways! I love Fall, fast cars, dirt, and Travis Pastrana (I had a Travis Pastrana lunchbox in elementary school), so of course this is one of my favorites!

Here's a shot of the Milky Way that I got on a spontaneous outing last summer! The center of the Milky Way is only visible for about half of the year, so I just happened to get lucky for this shot. Other important factors for Milky Way viewing is light pollution and the transparency of the air, which are bigger challenges than you may think. To make sure that it is going to be an opportune time to view the Milky Way or the northern lights, I use Dark Site Finder and Clear Sky Chart to check all of these factors.

Finally, on the bottom right, here's a shot of the northern lights during a meteor shower! I went out with my girlfriend's family to watch a strong meteor shower, but instead, we got a KP8 light show!

On the bottom left is a neat picture of the northern lights above the most unique-looking building on campus!
